The course provides a historical overview of development communication. It focuses on social justice issues: public health, gender equality, cultural imperialism, etc. It examines case-based project interventions. Alternative approaches such as participatory communication, Entertainment-Education, media advocacy, New Social Movement, and critical theories are also discussed.

CILO-1: Understand, describe and use different methodologies used in development communication. CILO-2: Analyze development communication research outcomes, and explain how these relate to methodological issues, techniques & questions. CILO-3: Use the knowledge gained to become effective scholars & researchers in the area of development communication. CILO-4: Understand the relationship between different research approaches, forms of knowledge & development communication methodologies. CILO-5: Identify, understand and explain the relationships between different forms of development communication.
