Course Description
This course aims at teaching students the core skills of professional journalists. Through the combined module of theoretical inquiry and practical training, the course addresses such issues as the understanding of news values, the cultivation of journalistic observation, the development of interview skills, the structure and organization of news story genres, as well as rules of attribution and quotation. Field trips are part of the course offering.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Recognize what makes a good news story and which factors will attract people’s attention or influence their lives.
CILO-2: Recognize the concepts and techniques of researching, interviewing, structuring and writing news stories.
CILO-3: Accurately interpret complex facts and identify the focus or main points of a news event to tell better stories.
CILO-4: Write headlines and complete news stories with practice of newsroom techniques.
CILO-5: Consider the legal and ethical responsibilities in the process of news gathering and writing.
