Course Description
This is an introductory course to the key theories and the processes of intercultural communication. Students will develop an appreciation and understanding of the cultures other than their own, and be equipped with the skills necessary to become an effective communicator in intercultural and multicultural contexts.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Cultivate and reinforce the skills and ability for resolving cultural conflicts in various contexts of cultural exchange.
CILO-2: Expand understanding on culture, in particular how it is constructed from the perspective of different contexts, and how it guides our communicative behaviour in implicit ways, and what makes intercultural communication possible and impossible.
CILO-3: Explore how religious, historical, gender factors affect intercultural communication.
CILO-4: Familiarize with the basic theory, concept, and topic of the field of intercultural communication.
CILO-5: Engage with the basic knowledge in communication, cultural studies, anthropology, psychology and sociology to understand intercultural phenomena.
CILO-6: Demonstrate ability and skills for intercultural exchange, including intercultural adaptation and conflict resolution. Students are made aware of their language use and behavioural conduct in order to achieve more effective communication.
