Course Description
This introductory course concentrates on the complex relationships between media and society. Topics include uses and functions of mass communication, the social impact of mass media on knowledge, attitudes and behavior, mass media audiences, and feedback systems. The history, structure, development, and technological trends of various media formats and platforms are explored. Students will have an overview of advertising and public relations industries, international and comparative mass media systems, as well as media professions.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Recognize, describe and use theories of media and society.
CILO-2: Provide a basic analysis of specific media issues and problems; and explain ways to address them.
CILO-3: Use knowledge gained to assess and explain media discourses, and associated social issues.
CILO-4: Identify the relationship between different audiences and different approaches to media and society.
