Introduction to the study and practice of civil engineering; subfields in the discipline, such as structural, geotechnical, environmental, water resources, ocean & coastal, transportation, and construction engineering; professionalism and professional registration; engineering ethics and safety. Independent study on various topics will be assigned to students.

CILO-1: Describe various subfields within civil engineering. CILO-2: Recognize various career paths and aspects of the profession. CILO-3: Recognize the role of civil engineering in providing society its fundamental needs. CILO-4: Discuss the issues in engineeing ethics, safety and/or profession leicensure. CILO-5: Report on the impacts of civil enginering on society by independent study.
