Course Description
This course provides a systematic study of linguistic theories, methods and findings concerning the description of natural language, Language acquisition and learning, intelligibility, normal and impaired speech, language developmental and acquired disorders.
Covering areas of human speech development, production and perception, prosody, language variation and bilingualism, students will be able to understand how does brain process language, the effects of neurological disorders and brain injury on language use. They will become familiar with the tools most often used for language, speech and voice analysis, such as FEELtrace (evaluating dynamics of speech), Hoarseness Diagram (properties of normal and pathological voices) and PRAAT (speech and phonetics analyses).
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Understand what is Clinical Linguistics and its importance and relationship with Applied Linguistics (Language teaching and research, mother and Foreign language acquisition and development; Cognitive linguistics; Psycho and social linguistics), Robotics, health sciences and other relevant areas.
CILO-2: Use specific linguistic terminology in the areas of Speech, Language and Voice studies.
CILO-3: Be familiar with the structure and functions of the articulatory system.
CILO-4: Classify consonants and vowels as well as being able to identify their acoustic characteristics on a spectrogram.
CILO-5: Identify different voice characteristics and understand the processes of voice production and perception. Voice production and perception.
CILO-6: Describe and comprehend speech and language disorders (from a linguistics perspective).
CILO-7: Apply the acquired knowledge to develop experimental research, collect and analyze data.
CILO-8: Critically analyze new data and examples on different voices, speeches and language developmental disorders.
