This course addresses the application of current methodologies in the teaching of English as a Second Language. Developments in linguistics, educational and psychological studies lead to constant new input to foreign language teaching methodology and practice. The course introduces the student to major current practices and how research-driven innovations are developed in current practice.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Describe current and historical approaches to second language teaching, identifying their strengths and weaknesses, paying special attention to Nation’s ‘four strands’ approach to language teaching.
CILO-2: Examine teaching techniques for what methods a teacher is employing (through observation).
CILO-3: Write lesson plans, justifying specific methods used and applicability to SLA.
CILO-4: Execute lessons in a micro-teaching setting with classmates with the aid of lesson plans.
CILO-5: Cultivate the habit of reflective practice as part of professional development as teachers.
CILO-6: State and justify beliefs about teaching and learning, and explain how to act on those beliefs in practice as teachers.
