This course focuses on the simultaneous mode of oral interpreting. Through introducing major trends of traditional and contemporary translation theories and principles, practical targeted progressive exercises conducted in laboratories and fieldwork, the course will help students acquire the essential knowledge and skills of simultaneous interpreting, understand the role of the interpreter in different contexts, as well as looking at the opportunities and challenges for the interpreter in the current world. Students will be encouraged to look at existing theories and methods of training critically with the aim of developing more effective strategies. The course will also introduce students to topics and methods in interpreting studies with the aim of helping students acquire research methods, identify research topics and develop research projects in interpreting.
