This course will introduce students to the basic socio-political concepts used in different cultures. It aims to enable students to compare and reflect on these social issues and socio-cultural concepts when they are used in the contexts of both Chinese and Western societies. It will provide students with a historical background of when and how these concepts are introduced, in Chinese, English and/or Portuguese. Samples of writing in the social sciences, including economics, political science, sociology and anthropology, will be selected and students are required to work on their translation.

CILO-1: Understand and contrast several key sociocultural concepts in the contexts of Chinese and Western societies. CILO-2: Relate the key concepts in their examination of translation problems. CILO-3: Effectively translate between Chinese and English in the areas of economics, political science, sociology and anthropology. CILO-4: Acquire the fundamental techniques of comparative analysis in translation. Theoretical topics are presented through practical translation tasks. Practical comparative skills and exercises are in the form of group projects as well as individual assignments.
