This course aims to assess the place and function of translation within the wider domain of comparative literature through the representative works of major scholars in translation and literature and thus to enable students to achieve a critical awareness of social, literary, and cultural issues crucial to translation and comparative studies. Students on the course will have the opportunities to compare and analyze commonalities and divergences, identities and discontinuities in the aesthetic transmission of texts between the Chinese / English / Portuguese literary traditions. Besides technical details, this course will also lay emphasis on helping students look into larger intercultural issues involved in a perception of translation and comparative literature.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Demonstrate knowledge of the two disciplines of Comparative Literature and Translation studies, such as the state of the art, the institutionalization of the discipline, the relationship between comparative literature and translation studies.
CILO-2: Describe common properties as well as distinctive features of literature expressed in the two highly cultural-specific and stylized contexts.
CILO-3: Describe the role of masterful translations of classics for comparative literature studies.
CILO-4: Develop their bi-lingual and bi-cultural vision as well as creative writing ability through comparing the source literature and its translation.
CILO-5: Demonstrate ability to use effective language in literary translation as intercultural communication.
