Course Description
For English-Chinese Specialization, the course focuses on the translation of journalistic articles and advertisements in the print/electronic media. Translation strategies and methods applicable to English-Chinese translation of this genre will be reviewed with special attention to the linguistic, stylistic and cultural differences between media texts in Chinese and English. The course adopts a functionalist approach and discusses how they can inform decisions regarding loyalty and liberty in translation. Real-life translation projects will be simulated and students will be required to do group presentations on their translations.
For Portuguese-Chinese and Portuguese-English Specializations, students will learn in the course the basic techniques for translating for the media, including newspapers, news magazines, and press releases. Students will study and compare the linguistic, stylistic, and cultural features of writing for the media in Portuguese and Chinese / Portuguese and English, then learn approaches for translating such texts between the two working languages. Attention will also be paid to the standard reference tools for this kind of translation.

CILO-1: Students in English-Chinese Specialization can describe key differences between English and Chinese syntax and style; Students in Portuguese-Chinese and Portuguese-English Specializations can apply the translation strategies and methods in translating media and political texts.
CILO-2: Students in English-Chinese Specialization can describe key features of media texts in each of the genres identified above both in English and Chinese; Students in Portuguese-Chinese and Portuguese-English Specializations can apply the theories in analyzing translation problems in media and political texts.
CILO-3: Students in English-Chinese Specialization can describe the functionalist approach to translation; Students in Portuguese-Chinese and Portuguese-English Specializations can explain reasons for different translations.
CILO-4: Students in English-Chinese Specialization can select appropriate translation strategies based on a functionalist analysis of the Source Text; Students in Portuguese-Chinese and Portuguese-English Specializations can apply the theories to their project, namely using the theories in the analysis of the existing translation or the text translated by themselves student.
CILO-5: Students in English-Chinese Specialization can produce localized translations adequate to the required function in the context of media texts; Students in Portuguese-Chinese and Portuguese-English Specializations can give a presentation of their project and share their experience with the class.
