Course Description
For the English-Chinese Specialization, the course is designed to brief students with a general idea of translation, history, and culture, aiming to help students to be able to situate translation in historical and cultural contexts. It is designed to meet two learning objectives: firstly, it introduces the basic concepts of translation, the cultural issues involved in translation, the history of translation in the West and that in China, and the Chinese and Western thinking on translation. Secondly, it discusses various translation projects situated in different historical and cultural contexts, aiming to provide students with a comprehensive knowledge of translation strategies and related research methodologies and how to work on their own translation projects. For the Portuguese-Chinese and Portuguese-English Specializations, this general introduction to the history of translation focuses on the long relationship between Chinese language and the Western European languages, and considers other translation traditions where relevant. The first part of the course examines the works, activities, and roles of important translators in history, with special reference to Macao's pivotal role in the history of translation. The second part of the course will look at the role of translation in the dissemination of knowledge, culture, law and trade.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Demonstrate understanding of the history of translation and of the historical development of the discipline of translation studies.
CILO-2: Conduct re-evaluation of translations from the perspective of social/cultural/historical change requires a reevaluation of translation.
CILO-3: Identify cultural issues/problems in translation and to deal with cultural issues with proper translation strategies.
CILO-4: Critique translations in accordance with different cultural/social norms in different historical periods.
CILO-5: Demonstrate ability to work on translation projects and conduct translation projects in a proper way.
