Course Description
This course surveys computer-aided and computer-based methods and approaches used in the translation area. For the English-Chinese Specialization, the course is focusing on Computer Aided Translation (CAT). It aims to acquaint scholars of translation studies with prominent and cutting-edge technology for translation. The course will introduce both Machine Translation (MT) and Translation Memory (TM) systems in addition to the use of the Internet, Web-based translation aids and other applications that can aid translation. The course will also involve selected readings in the history and evolution of Machine Translation and current developments in in the field. For the Portuguese-Chinese and Portuguese-English Specializations, the course is designed to prepare the students for professional computer-aided and computer-based approaches that used in the translation area. The course aims to focus on introducing the students to the linguistic concepts and basic theories in computer, translation, and machine translation. Concentrating on the mainstream developments and providing some interaction with the technologies, such as thesaurus, dictionaries, translation memory system, translation software and cognition tools.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Describe the current scope and use of Computer Aided Translation.
CILO-2: Produce rapid and error-free translations by using MT+Post Editing.
CILO-3: Create and manage Translation Memories and Terminology Databases for increased efficiency and consistency in translation.
CILO-4: Produce localized translations by making effective use of web-based aids.
