Course Description
This course aims at introducing the various direct and indirect taxes currently in force in the Macao and Hong Kong Special Administrative Regions as representative examples of taxation from both continental and common law systems. The taxes will include those levied on goods, properties, personal income and corporate earnings. Some discussions on tax planning issues will also be covered.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Define the meaning and purpose of taxation in general.
CILO-2: Explain the basic framework of Hong Kong taxation and Macau taxation.
CILO-3: Distinguish between the common law-led and continental law-led taxation systems.
CILO-4: Master the basics of Hong Kong Property Tax, Hong Kong Salaries Tax, Hong Kong Profits Tax and Personal Assessment in a general sense.
CILO-5: Identify the various types of direct taxes in Macau, in particular Industrial Tax, Professional Tax, Complementary Income Tax and Urban Property Tax.
CILO-6: Identify the various indirect taxes in Macau.
CILO-7: Differentiate the main differences of taxation under the two different legal systems and perform calculations and make proper interpretations with legal justifications.
